Passive House Retrofit, London

Passive House Retrofit, London

Project Description

Renovation of the residential building responds to the client’s brief to provide 40 linear meters of book storage for a two-storey end of terrace house and improve the energy efficiency of the house. The architect decided to work within the fabric of the existing building rather than create a new loft structure or extension, due to the modest budget.

The Challenge in Work

Partel consulted and worked with Arboreal Architecture to designed a high-performance building that improves air quality and enabling them to reduce energy costs. There was installed a LUNOS ventilation system supplied by Partel, which controls moisture and provides constant fresh air without heat loss thanks to heat recovery units.

Project type: Low Energy Build - Total Retrofit
Location: East London, UK
Building: Single-Family house
Completion: 2018

Project Completion

To reduce costs and keep things eco, it would all be plywood, even the cladding for the cooker extractor. There is also a state-of-the-art ventilation system, which controls moisture. "You pay truckloads for stuff you never see,” the homeowner observes. That’s true — but this house now has very low energy bills, smells fresh, and has healthy indoor air.

This 'green retrofit' project has been shortlisted for the 2019 New London Architecture Don't Move, Improve! awards.
